Research expertise, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and a unique IP portfolio: At the interface of electronics and photonics, the Terahertz Sensory Performance Center is shaping the future of semiconductor and sensor technologies – reliably, sustainably, and with a strong focus on practical applications.

With terahertz-based solutions, we develop customized approaches to drive innovation in communications, sensing, material diagnostics, security, and medical technology. As a one-stop shop with integrated system engineering, we cover the entire development and manufacturing chain—from chip to prototype module.

Photonics Meets High Frequency

The Terahertz Sensory Performance Center - Who we are

At the Terahertz Sensory Performance Center, the Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR and the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems IMS have joined forces to bring new technologies in this highly attractive frequency range from the laboratory into real-world applications.

With combined expertise and resources in radar and photonics, as well as many years of experience in customer projects and contract research, we are a reliable partner for innovative sensing solutions at the limits of technical feasibility.

Through our in-house research activities, our extensive scientific network, our university partners – Ruhr University Bochum, University of Duisburg-Essen, and Hochschule Ruhr West – as well as close cooperation with chip manufacturers, the latest insights flow directly into practical, industry-grade solutions for the benefit of business and society.

Standardization for Reliability

To enable successful deployment of terahertz technology in measurement and automation applications, we actively participate in committees such as the VDI Specialist Committee 1.31 “Terahertz Systems” and contribute our expertise to other technical bodies, including the IEEE 802.15 Standing Committee on Terahertz (SC-THz), to help prepare future standards. Clear and verifiable quality criteria for applied methods, along with a unified terminology, are intended to ensure reliability, facilitate cooperation, and simplify market access for the new technology.

For our solutions, we rely wherever possible on widely adopted technologies and industry-compatible standard tools. Quality assurance is ensured also via certification of our own processes according to recognized standards:

  • ISO 4 cleanroom according to ISO 14644-1:2015
  • ISO 6 cleanroom according to ISO 14644-1:2015
  • ISO 9001:2015 certified design and manufacturing of electronic assemblies
