With terahertz systems, applications can be completely reimagined, enabling solutions that previously seemed impossible. Although terahertz systems have long been regarded as promising, their development and practical use have so far been limited by technological challenges and high costs. Today, the technology is mature: as research platform for terahertz sensing, we bridge high-frequency electronics and photonics, developing compact, robust, and high-performance terahertz systems for:

  • Quality assurance, material characterization, non-destructive testing: Inline-capable, contactless sensor systems that penetrate dust, plastics, or enclosures; low-maintenance, robust, and suitable for imaging and spectroscopy. 
  • Communication: Extremely high data rates, e.g., for on-chip communication. 
  • Medical technology and contactless monitoring: Detailed tissue analysis, for example in early detection of skin cancer, as well as hygienic, unobtrusive monitoring of sensitive or hard-to-reach patient groups. 
  • Environmental monitoring and precision farming: Vegetation monitoring, structural and moisture analysis. 
  • Transportation: Compact antenna systems for weather- and light-independent 360° situational awareness, enabling autonomous driving and logistics.
